In The Secret History of the Necronomicon, Arkay Tilghman explores the H.P. Lovecraft's mysterious and controversial work. First, he travels to Egypt, exploring a time and texts which contributed to Alhazred's work. Then, he moves to the time of Alhazred and how the Templars brought Al Azif from Constantinople into Europe proper. Next, we learn more about the translations of Dr. Dee and Wormius and why Dee's version was not published in his lifetime. Crossing the Atlantic, he uncovers stories of the Necronomicon in the New World. After a chapter dealing specifically with Lovecraft, Tilghman writs about the Necronomicon today and why we're unlikely to see and digitized versions of the rare text.

Writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in 1890. When he was just three years old, his father was institutionalized for syphalitic insanity. From then on, young Lovecraft and his mother lived with her father, Whipple Phillips. The child was a voracious reader, an attentive scholar of his grandfather's friends, a delicate soul, and a dreamer. Even as a boy, he wrote stories of fantasy and horror.
When young Lovecraft reached adulthood, he wrote the now-famous stories which many of us to a terrifying world that was right here with us. We didn't have to travel to Mars or some made-up world to be horrified by giant beings seeking our destruction. They didn't arrive on space ships, they'd been sleeping here all along.
In particular, Lovecraft's stories introduced us to a mysterious work called the "Necronomicon." It was written, so he said, by a "mad Arab" named Abdul Alhazred. It contained the secrets of Elder Gods and terrifying beings. It detailed blasphemous rites. Reading it might make a man go mad--or give him the keys to prevent evil from being released on the planet.
The Necronomicon has been a subject of much controversy for nearly 100 years now. Did Lovecraft invent it wholecloth? Or does it have a broader historical background? In this book, I lay out the Secret History of the Necronomicon and attempt to explain some of the confusion and controversy surrounding how it was handled in Lovecraft's stories.

The Secret History of the Necronomicon is a short, easily-digested read recommended for the beginner in Cthulhuvian studies. Tilghman does an admirable job of tracing the history of this book, from its pre-Alhazred roots in Egypt and Babylon through its composition by Alhazred (along with some fascinating biographical details of the "Mad Arab"), and on to its many colorful connections to such disparate topics as the Knights Templar, John Dee, the lost colony of Roanoke, and even the founding of Rhode Island. Along the way, he clears up such misconceptions as such a rare and little-understood work can accumulate -- mostly the result of the artistic license of H.P. Lovecraft.It is, however, slightly marred by overindulgence in "campfire stories" -- a natural enough temptation when writing of such a legendary book of myths and black magic, but out of place in a serious scholarly work. When Tilghman writes of monsters from the sea intervening in a naval battle between the Danes and Swedes, it does provide an amusing bit of color and drama, but does Tilghman actually believe that this event took place? It isn't clear from the context, and in a subject as plagued by fanciful embellishment and superstition as the Necronomicon, it seems a little irresponsible to add more fuel to that particular fire.
But this is a minor quibble, and a reasonably trained critical eye is all that is needed to sort out these misleading bits of color from the solid history.

Nothing but a waste of time, glad I didn't pay to read this. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone I know.
When I picked this book up, I wasn't quite sure what to expect...but with a name like "The Secret History of the Necronomicon," I couldn't resist.
Concise and approachable, The Secret History takes a scholarly crack at filling in the blanks and connecting the dots between the people involved in the translation and transmutation of The Book of Dead Names...and as any student of history and fan of Lovecraft will appreciate, the people make the stories. And truly, there are some "celebrity" appearances From Alhazred to the Templars to John Dee and a connection to the lost colony of Roanoke, Tilghman traces the book's vector(s) of transmission. What history of this infamous grimoire would really be complete without such connections?
Tilghman is clearly knowledgeable about the subject matter and brings a sure voice to the discussion. I only wish the book was longer! This one is for fans of Lovecraftiana in particular.
Such a great supplemental. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely worth every penny! I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the (mysterious) background on the Necronomicon.
I've never read any lovecraftian fiction. I have the desire to, but was always afraid it would go straight over my head. For me, this book is the perfect stepping stone into the genre. I was able to get a taste of what I'm about to explore and feel I'm ready for more. Great read, even if your not into lovecraft...yet.
An excellent Lovecraftian diversion and perfect companion to longer works. My only wish is that it were a little bit longer. But hey, with such a sensitive subject, legitimate sources are hard to find.
A concise and very scholarly-looking attempt to establish a complete history of the life of the great Forbidden Text of the Cthulhu mythos; makes a neat effort to establish it as a reality which was introduced into Mr. Lovecraft's hermitlike world.
